Rossini's brings Jazz and Authentic Italian cuisine to Kits Beach.
When the May family took possession of 1525 Yew Street in August of 1992, little did they know, despite 20 years of collective experience in the hospitality industry, that they had instituted a legend.
Hungry not just for good pasta, but also for a neighbourhood gathering place, the local kitsilano residents came in droves. Everyone was made to feel welcome. The May family - Arni, Anne, and sons Mark, Stephen and Shayne - created an ambience of warmth and charm that soon had the locals treating Rossini's as a home away from home. And of course the news spread.
Arni and Anne are the perfect hosts who never let tha standard of cordial welcome drop. Mark oversees the varied and affordable wine cellar; Stephen keeps the bar humming with a never-failing sense of humour; and Shayne has discovered a knack for cooking. (His recipe for Black Sambuka Prawns has become justifyably famous.) The extended family all get put to work upon occasion - Shannon, Shayne's wife and Janette, Mark's Wife.
Rossini's chef is headed up by Italy's "Nello Foschi". A creative individual who is delighted to interact with his many customers preparing special requests. Nello's culinary creativeness shrines.
Arni's background as a musician and producer, spannning close to four decades, inspired him to offer live entertainment and led to a roster of stellar performers, among them such legendary entertainers as Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, The Ray Brown Trio, Hawaiins Betty Loo Taylor, Jimmy Borges, and Noel Okimoto, songstresses Debbie Duncan and Amandah Jantzen, and a host of Vancover's finest musicians. The wonderful Linton Garner was also a mainstay of the glittering array of talent, performing several nights every week until passing away in March 2003. A foundation has since been set up in his name to provide scholarships in Music studies at Capilano college.
The Mays don't just sit back on their laurels having amassed a large and faithful following for their winning combination of great food and wine, cozy atmosphere and outstanding live entertainment. Due to the family's long involvement in sports, Rossini's sponsors volleyball, fastball, and racquetball and is a strong supporter of local professional sports teams. The restaurant also does evetns for charities: Cancer Research, the Food Bank, Childrens wish foundation and a traditional Christmans Lunch for the less fortunate served by members of the "Senate Club," a light hearted association formed by some of Rossini's regular customers.
In June 1999, Rossini's expanded it's excellent quality of entertainment and warm atmosphere, to a 2nd location in Gastown.
But it is above all the friendliness of the atmosphere here that ensures that the customers keep coming back for weddings, engagement parties, birthdays, gatherings of all kinds.
